  • Sexualy dimorphic

  • Adult male is brightly colored, with feathers an iridescent shining plum violet color along back, wings, face and throat, with white on the rest of the body

  • Females (and juveniles) are streaky brown and buff color and can easily be mistaken for a thrush.

  • Monogamous

  • Nest in cavities such as tree holes high off the ground, holes in river banks, or old hollow fence posts

  • Line nests with dung, leaves and other plant material

  • Omnivorous, eating fruit such as mulberries and figs, insects such as butterflies, bees, wasps, and locust

  • Found in sub-Saharan African - typically in woodland, grassland, or riverine areas
