Sexualy dimorphic
Adult male is brightly colored, with feathers an iridescent shining plum violet color along back, wings, face and throat, with white on the rest of the body
Females (and juveniles) are streaky brown and buff color and can easily be mistaken for a thrush.
Monogamous
Nest in cavities such as tree holes high off the ground, holes in river banks, or old hollow fence posts
Line nests with dung, leaves and other plant material
Omnivorous, eating fruit such as mulberries and figs, insects such as butterflies, bees, wasps, and locust
Found in sub-Saharan African - typically in woodland, grassland, or riverine areas
