Southern White Rhinoceros

  • LouLou (F) 11/6/1997

Identifying Features:

History:

  • LouLou was born in the wild, at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Per the paperwork that came with her, it looks like Albuquerque purchased her & her mom 11/1998, before loaning LouLou to San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2014. The 11/9/1997 birth date is an estimate, plus/minus a year, and she came from Kruger.

  • Howie our male rhino, passed away in September of 2024. He will be missed by all.

More Information:

  • LouLou has a chronic eye condition that makes her sensitive to light. Keeper and vetrinary staff closely monitor this condition.

  • She startles easily with loud groups or yelling

  • The new fence at the top of the exhibit is to prevent her from feeling surrounded by guests. Her wellbeing is our primary goal.

  • Rhinoceros is Greek for nose-horned

  • IUCN: Near threatened (the Northern White Rhino is functionally extinct)

  • Poaching for keratin-based horn

  • Communicate through grunts, snorts, and whistles

  • Can run more than 30 mph

  • Grazer - lawnmowers of the savanna

White Rhinos are grazers, so they have a wide mouth to eat grass

Black Rhinos are browsers, so they have a narrow mouth to eat leaves from plants.
