Masai Giraffe

Identifying Features:

Sunshine's chest pattern resembles rays of the sun.

History:

  • Miguu was born at the Los Angeles Zoo. He arrived at the Phx Zoo March 2010

  • Miguu is father to female calves Siku, Rafiki, Moshi, Luna and Aurora

  • Imara was born at the San Diego Zoo. She came to Phx Zoo 10/2012

  • Imara is mother to female Rafiki born at Phx zoo 6/26/18

  • Sunshine was born at the Santa Barbara Zoo. She came to Phx Zoo Spring 2015.

  • Sunshine is mother to female calves Siku (9/12/17), Moshi (3/22/19), Luna (2/7/2022) and Aurora (10/25/23). All 4 were born at the Phx Zoo.

  • Aurora - new baby born to Sunshine & Miguu. Name chosen in public vote

  • Aurora transferred to the Brevard Zoo in Florida Spring 2025.

More Information:

  • Our giraffes are Masai giraffes

  • Masai are often noticably darker than other species with distinctive vine leaf shaped patches.

  • Ruminants (animal that chews its cud)

  • Zoo diet: Bermuda and alfalfa hay, produce, herbivore pellets

  • Tongue is 17.7 to 21.7 inches long

  • Prehensile tongue and lips

  • Spend majority of the day feeding

  • Most water intake comes from food and dew

  • Have hair covered horns called ossicones

  • Pacing gait: move both left legs together and both right legs together

  • Giraffe's patches are primarily for camoflage.

  • Beneath the patches is a sophisticated system of blood vessels that acts as a thermal window to release body heat.

  • Gestation: 14-15 months

  • Lifespan: 15-20 for males, 20-25 for females.

  • Bulls often live solitary, moving from group to group.

Giraffe Conservation:

  • For every 4 elephants, only one giraffe remains in the wild

  • Over the past 35 years, giraffe numbers have decreased by nearly 30%

  • In primed habitats, numbers have dropped by 95%. They have lost 90% of historical range over last three centuries.

Species vs. Subspecies: The IUCN currently lists one species with 9 subspecies. New data may indicate that their are 4 species of Giraffe, with some subspecies. (currently recognized by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation). More study is needed.


Once the most populous giraffe, Masai Giraffes are currently listed as Endangered by IUCN. Their population has decreased by 50% due to poaching and habitat fragmentation and poaching.
