Grevy's Zebra

Identifying Features:

  • Masika has an ear notch

  • Masika is generally out on exhibit during the day.

  • Tuari is usually out at night and can be seen at evening events.

History:

  • Tuari was named using a public naming contest – he was named after his hometown of TUscon, ARIzona, where he was born (Reid Park Zoo).

  • Najuma is from San Diego Safari Park. She was brought here on an SSP breeding reccommendation and is expected to be inroduced to our male eventually. 

More Information:

  • Also know as Imperial Zebra

  • Our Zebras are not with the giraffes because the males are territorial. Grevy's behavior is different than other Zebras. At other zoos, you may see Plains Zebras in the same exhibit as Giraffes.

  • IUCN: Endangered

  • Stripe pattern is unique for each individual

  • Do not have concrete social system

  • Largest species of zebra

  • Males are territorial - they find a good patch of grass and stay there, chasing away other species like Tommies.

  • Females will travel with their young.


  • 13-month gestation

  • Disruptive coloration makes it harder to pick out individuals in a herd.

  • Recent studies show that the coloring may also be disruptive to flies.
