Identifying Features:

  • Wilkes - black tail tip with 2 vertical white stripes; rounder head and thinner tear marks

  • Rhett - white tail tip; darkest base coat and reddish; right eye slightly darker than left eye and always tearing

History:

Beau (M) passed away on 3/1/24 , he is missed by both his keepers and his brothers. 

More Information:

  • They love chunk meat day and bone day. Very excited when they get bloodsicles.

  • Fastest land mammal, 65-75 mph

  • Males live in bachelor groups called coalitions

  • Females tend to be solitary except for cubs

  • One of few cats that are active during the day.

  • Black tear marks on the face aborb glare

  • IUCN: Vulnerable

  • Currently less than 7,100 in the wild

  • Threats - illegal pet trade; human-wildlife conflict

  • Wealthy oil people like to have them as pets

  • They do not thrive in protected areas

  • 80-90% infant mortality

  • Vast majority live in unprotected land which creates tension with ranchers and farmers
