Sumatran Tiger

Identifying Features:

  • Raja is larger and weighs over 300 lbs. Two stripes on his right forehead connect to form a sideways "V". (Click 'READ MORE' for picture). He also has a birthmark on the bottom of his left iris.

History:

  • Raja came from Point Defiance Zoo, Tacoma WA.

  • Joanne came from the San Diego Safari Park

  • Joanne was born at San Diego Safari Park to parents Delta & Utan. Utan was a former Phx Zoo resident. She has had 2 litters of cubs.

  • Best time to see them active is early or late in the day or on overcast days.

Answers to common questions:

  • Pond only on one side because other side is attached to den for potential breeding

  • Fed 1st thing in the moring in the night house, which allows keepers to service the exhibit

  • Raja and Joanne are kept separate because Sumatran tigers are highly solitary. Tigers compete for food in the wild and only come together for breeding. Raja and Joanne are NOT going to be a breeding pair.

More Information:

  • Sumatran tigers are the smallest surviving subspecies of tiger, with them only living on the island of Sumatra

  • Highly solitary

  • ICUN - Critically Endangered (fewer than 400 left in the wild)

  • Male Sumatran tigers weigh 200-300 lbs, while male Amur tigers can weigh up to 450 lbs.

  • Female Sumatran tigers weith 180-300 lbs.

The island of Sumatra is the only place where tigers, rhinos, orangutans, bears and elephants live together. The presence of Sumatran tiger is an important indicator of biodiversity in the forest. Protecting tigers and their habitat means many other species benefit-including humans.
