Brazilian Rainbow Boa

  • Found in S. America mainland

  • Ridges on scales act a s prism to refract light

  • 9 subspecies of rainbow boas

  • Popular in pet trade - small size and beautiful color, but challenging to own

Hog Island Boa

  • Found on two islands in Honduras

  • Dwarf from of boa constrictor

  • Smaller and paler than mainland boas

  • Threatened by storms/flooding

  • Invasive species

  • Popular in pet trade

Pearl Island Boa

  • Founnd off Panama coast

  • Rare in captivity

  • 1999 zoo study found natives kill any snake they encounter

  • Threats from wildlife and fish processing plant

  • Examples of Foster's Rule or "Island Rule" - Hog Island and Pearl Island Boas are smaller than mainland boas because food is more scarce on the islands.
