Identifying Features:

History:

  • Arrived at Zoo late 2025 from Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA.

More Information:

  • Found mostly in central South America in arid scrub and dry deciduous forests

  • Males are mostly dark red with a narrow white eye ring, black crown.

  • Females are more brown overall with a whitish throat and a crimson rump

  • Forage on the ground or around vegetative cover.

  • When not breeding, they often form flocks, which may join other species of seed-eating birds.
