phoenix Zoo TRAIL CARDS
History:
Poppy (F) dob 4/27/2010, moved to the Phoenix Zoo in 2012 from the Santa Ana Zoo. Poppy passed away Jan 2024. : (
Maximo arrived in Phoenix from the Caldwell Zoo (Tyler, Texas) in late 2019.
Poppy was the queen of that exhibit.
When she moved in she took charge!!
Poppy was great at catching sparrows, liked to eat the head and leave the rest.

Weigh 17 to 24 ounces, 6 to 10 inches in length with tail of 12 to 15 inches
Males and females are similar in appearance
All members of group will care for infants, but male does largest share
Largely impacted by habitat destruction
Population once down to 200 individuals
Current populatio estimate is around 2,500
1/3 of wild population originated from captive breeding
General information about Tamarins and Marmosets
Generally give birth to twins (triplets and singletons do occur)
Young carried on back of parents
Large social groups often with both tamarins and marmosets
Males and females help to raise off spring
Sharp claws - used to dig into tree bark
