History:

CONSERVATION: Phoenix Zoo's Birds Manager, Kyle Waites, leads Proyecto Paujil - a project that works closely with local coffee farmers in northern Colombia to conduct conservation research on the critically endangered blue-billed curassow. This species has suffered tremendous habitat loss, resulting in the fragmentation of remaining populations. Proyecto Paujil works to understand the status of these populations by directly incorporating local community members in its research. The project also conducts community outreach to increase awareness about the importance of conserving the blue-billed curassow.

More Information:

  • One of the rarest birds on Earth

  • Found in humid forests in northwestern part of Columbia

  • Dieg of fruits, worms, insects, snails

  • IUCN:  Critically endangered

  • Phx Zoo Keeper, Kyle, currently doing study in northwestern Columbia using trail cameras to research their population and range

  • Local folklore explains that curassows got their curly crests when they stole fire from the Jaguar and gave it to humanity. As the curassows carried a burning log on their backs, the flames burned their crest feathers into crisp curls.
