More Information:

  • Sonoran Mud Turtle - carnivorous; diurnal in spring and fall; can be active at any time during summer months; brumates under soil in water or in riverbank cavities; aquatic; will travel terrestrial; foul smelling musk - defense mechanism, so don't pick them up! : )

  • Ornate Box Turtle - omnivorous; diurnal; most active in the morning and during rainy conditions; primarily terrestrial; shelters in burrows; can live 30+ years; often killed on roadways. They are called box turtles because they can close their shell completely off, hiding their head and legs.
