Identifying Features:

More Information:

  • Chuckwalla - live on rocky slopes and boulder piles; rarely drink water; primarily herbivorous, but occasionally eat insects. They can inflate their bodies and wedge themselves between rocks to prevent predators from pulling them out.

  • Sonoran Desert Tortoise - diurnal and crepuscular; shelters and brumates in burrows; burrows under large rocks or in banks of washes; strong, paddle-like forelimbs for digging; will pull head into shell when threatened.

  • Spiny-Tailed Iguana - non-native; introduced tro grouns of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in the 1970's; still reproducing there but have not expanded their range.

Not currently on exhibit in this enclosure:

  • Desert Iguana - heat tolerant: remains active at hottest part of day; habitat restricted to range of creosote bush; diurnal; primarily herbivorous.

  • Tiger Whiptail - alert, fast moving, ground dwelling, diurnal; spends mots of its time foraging; brumates. They are very common on zoo grounds.
