Found near water in desertscrub, grasslands, chaparral, woodland environments
Active during the day and twilight
Hibernate late fall to winter
Dietary generalist actively forages for frogs, toads, tadpoles, lizards, salamanders, snakes, small mammals, fish and insects.
Narrow-Headed Gartersnake
Protected
Long, narrow snout
scarred and missing tails where crayfish have been introduced
Terrestrial Gartersnake
Found in western North America
Immensely variable species, ofter mistaken for other species
Pale stripes on sides of body
Checkered Gartersnake (not currently on exhibit)
