Great Plains Toad

  • Spends most of its time underground

  • Eats ants, termites, spiders and centipedes

Couch's Spadefoot Toad

  • Stays burrowed for 8-10 monts a year

  • Eggs hatch in 36 hours; metamorphosize in 7-8 days

  • Desert adaptation to develop fast because pools of water dry up quickly

Red Spotted Toad

  • Males will wrestle for territory

  • Can tolerate 40% loss in body water and still be active during dry spells

Sonoran Desert Toad

  • Largest toad in the U.S.

  • Toxic secretions that can cause hallucinations, paralysis, or death in dogs and other vertebrates

Tiger Salamander

  • Largest land-dwelling salamander in North America

  • Relies on burrows from other animals

Green Toad

  • Found in SE Arizona

  • Breeds in temporary streambeds
