  • Diurnal

  • One of the most numerous owl species in Central American and South America, but less than 100 left in Arizona, so they have been given legal protections.

  • The crown has elongated white/buff streaks

  • Two dark spots on the nape, often termed "fals eyes" byb birders. Scoll down for picture.

  • Like the Northern Pygmy-Owl, this owl is a bold and ferocious daytime predator, sometimes attacking prey larger than itself, such as American Robins or young domestic fowl.
