History:

  • Enrique and Vince came to Phoenix from Los Angeles Zoo prior to 1st birthday. Enrique was transferred to the El Paso Zoo ~2021. 

  • Alastor (M) 2/27/2017 - passed away April 2026

CONSERVATION: The Phoenix Zoo supports the conservation and management of endangered peninsular pronghorn through the Peninsular Pronghorn Consortium. As part of a strategy to recover this pronghorn subspecies, the Consortium is helping augment populations of peninsular pronghorn in the Baja Peninsula.

More Information:

  • AKA Baja California Pronghorn

  • Start rut in mid-late June into fall; guests can expect to see higher activity level.

  • Crepuscular - primarily active during twilight hours

  • Subspecies is critically endangered

  • Not an antelope or a deer; belongs to it's own taxonomic family

  • "Horns" are a cross between true horns and antlers

  • Can run up to 40 mpg for 30+ minutes

  • Can sprint 60 mph

  • 2nd fastest land mammal, fastest in North America

  • Adapted to outrun the American Cheetah (extinct)
