Identifying Features:

History:

  • Fern and Thistle came to us from the Oakland Zoo, where they were rescued after their mother died in a vehicle strike. They come from a litter of three, their brother spruce was sent to another zoo per SSP reccomendations. 

  • Fern and Thistle have both been altered as not to breed, while their brother spruce was not. 

  • While Mountain Lions are typically solitary, those who are raised together can share the same space.

  • IUCN: Least Concern

  • Largest of the small cats

  • Average size - Males: 110-180 lbs; Females: 80-130lbs

  • Bergmann's rule - animals living further north in colder climages tend to be larger than their counterparts in more southern/warmer regions

  • Have many comon names, including cougar, puma, or panther

  • Widest range of any animal in the west

  • Once found across the country

  • Only remain in Florida in the East

  • Long tail assists with balance

  • Powerful legs

  • Babies have spots and blue eyes

  • Live 10-12 years in the wild (into early 20s in captivity)
