Identifying Features:

  • Scarlet had a dental abscess as pup, successfully operated on, left scar on face.

  • Jade has white tipped tail and a small spot under left eye.

  • Luna is the darkest overall.

History:

  • Born at Phoenix Zoo. Parents & brothers went to El Paso Zoo.

CONSERVATION: The Phoenix Zoo supports the purchase of acoustic equipment to assist Arizona Game and Fish Department’s efforts to monitor Mexican wolves in new areas through howling surveys. This technology enhances the efficiency and accuracy of surveys, improving the understanding of current population ranges.

More Information:

  • Keystone species - important to environment. They keep grazing species in check so they don't over graze.

  • Apex predator

  • Rarest, southern-most,  and most genetically distinct subspecies of all North American gray wolves

  • Found in ponderosa pine-covered mouontains, pinon-juniper forests, oak woodlands, and adjacent grasslands above 4,000 feet.

  • Not found in the desert

  • Shed thick fur in warmer months

  • Live in small packs compared to other wolf subspecies: 4-6 individuals

  • Pack includes a male and female pair and their pups

  • Packs have large territories

  • One of the most endangered wolf subspecies

  • Human-wildlife conflict

  • Controversy over reintroduction program
