Identifying Features:

  1. Nahashaza is missing ½ of right wing

History:

Leila was originally born in Northern Utah, but was injured in the wild and deemed non-releasable. She lived at the Navajo Nation Zoo until arriving to the Phoenix Zoo in April of 2025.

  • Found in the Northern Hemisphere

  • Most widely distributed species of eagle

  • Most common official national animal in the world - emblem of Albania, Germany, Austria, Mexico, and Kazakhstan

  • Build large nests in cliffs and other high places

  • May return for several breeding years

  • Eats primarily small mammals and birds, although it is capable of killing large prey.

  • Uses talons for hunting and killing prey, beak is just for eating

  • Protected by law

  • Wingspan more than 6 feet

  • Slightly smaller than the bald eagle
