Coyote

  • Zoltan (pronounced ZOL-tun) (M) ~5/2019

  • Hilda (F) ~4/2019

Identifying Features:

  • Zoltan is lighter in color with wide set, lighter colored eyes.  His tail has a white tip.

  • Hilda is darker in color with a 'saddle' just behind her shoulders. She has closer, darker colored eyes, and her tail tip is all black.

*Note: In winter, Hilda has the same coloration, but thicker fur. Zoltan has 'saddle', but less pronounced than Hilda.

History:

  • Both coyotes are wild born.

  • Zoltan originally from Tucson. Imprinted early. Came to us from Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center. Placed on exhibit 11/2019.

  • Hilda orphaned and found by a hiker. Came to us from Southwest Wildlife. Placed on exhibit 11/2019.

More Information:

  • Zoltan often wags his tail and loves the attention from his keepers.

  • They were named by zoo staff after Hilda Tresz and her husband Zoltan.

  • Monogamous

  • Generalist diet; will adjust diet based on time of year

  • Some live in packs and defend territory

  • Some are solitary and transient

  • Dig shallow dens under vegetation

  • Litter size dependent on food abundance and population density

  • Escorting - When hiking or walking, a coyote may be walking along near you to make sure you are not a threat to their den/cubs. They are escorting you out of their territories.
