Identifying Features:

History:

  • not related, but all born within about a year of each other

  • all were orphaned and raised together

  • Found in Tucson area

  • Jan (F) ~2015 passed away early 2025.

More Information:

  • called "Javelina" - based on spear or javelin like teeth

  • Main diet is agaves and prockly pears

  • Prickly pear is ideal in arid range due to high water content

  • Live in herds of 5 to 15 that are notably cohesive; members eat, sleep, and forage together

Peccary vs Pig:

  • Peccaries have small ears and tails not easily seen from a distance.

  • Peccaries have 3 toes on hind foot vs. Pigs have 4 toes on hind foot

  • Peccaries canines (tusks) are straight vs. Pigs teeth are curved

  • Peccaries are found in the New World - North & South America. Pigs come from the Old World - Europe, Asia, & Africa
