  • Largest bird in South America

  • Related to Ostrich, Emu and Cassowary

  • Males create ground nest for eggs

  • Many females will lay eggs in same nest

  • Males incubate eggs and care for young - will become aggressive to guard chicks

  • IUCN: Near Threatened

  • Threats include hunting for meat, eggs, skin, and oils; habitat loss for agricultural use and industrialization
