Identifying Features:

History:

  • Two male curl-crested aracari chicks hatched on exhibit September 2025

More Information:

  • Commonly found in tropical rainforests of western Brazil, southeastern Peru, and northeastern Bolivia

  • Type of toucan

  • Can live as long as 18 years in the wild.

  • Males and females share same colorful appearance, but females have slightly shorter bill.

  • Use their bills to drink water from tree crevices and pick and eat fruit

  • Sometimes eat bird eggs or small young birds

  • Protect bills while sleeping by flipping their tailfeathers over their heads

  • Build nests in tree holes

  • Females and males share parenting duties, from building the nest to caring for young.
