History:

CONSERVATION: The Phoenix Zoo supports the AZA's SAFE Andean Highland Flamingo program, which supports the recovery and conservation of Andean, Chilean and Puna flamingos. Currently the program focuses on flamingos in the Andean highlands of northern Chile - conducting research, engaging with the public and assisting with identification, prioritization and designation of critical flamingo habitat.

More Information:

  • Gray/white when born

  • Develop pink color after about 2 years

  • Pink color resulting from diet of crustaceans and algae rich in alpha and beta carotenoid pigments

  • Shade of pink determined by species - NOT diet

  • Some species are just darker than others

  • Chilean are more pink than the Greater Flamingo, but the very intense pink species is the Caribbean flamingos

  • Flamingos stand on one leg when sleeping. It conserves warmth, saves energy, is gives the better balance.
