Identifying Features:

  • Males are all black, while females are blond in color.

  • All three of our monkeys are female.

History:

  • Bennie & Maddie arrived at Phx Zoo in Jan. 2023 from the Brevard Zoo

  • Bennie is great-granddaughter of Olivia


Olivia (F) born 10/26/1996 at the Hogle Zoo - died Sept. 2023 at age 26.

More Information:

  • Found in rainforests of central S. America, ranging through eastern Bolivia, souther Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina

  • Eat mostly leaves, but compliment their diet with fruits, buds and flowers.

  • Get their water needs met by their food

  • Wet hands using dew on leaves and then lick their hands

  • Long, strong prehensile trails

  • Tails are hairless on the underside, allowing them to be sensitive to touch and act in identifying things

  • Sexually Dimorphic - males are black, females are lighter brown or tan

  • They howl to communicate their location, allowing them to space out so they don't have to complete with eachother for food.
