Identifying Features:

Diego - R. metal WAP24-382

History:

  • Most of the rhinoceros hornbills are named for where they came from

  • Diego came for San Diego (currently off exhibit)

  • Sylvester has been at the Phoenix zoo for the longest.

  • Minnie is from Minneapolis

  • Sylvester and Minnie were newly introduced as a breeding pair in early 2025. They are getting along great!

  • Believed to be the symbol of the bird god Phx Zoo has ongoing project with HUTAN in Malaysia to design artificial nest boxes Three others located in Tropical Flights

More Information:

  • From Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand

  • Male eyes are red, female eyes are light

  • Female will stay in the nest 30 days after chick hatches

  • IUCN: Vulnerable

  • Believed to be the symbol of the bird god

  • Phx Zoo has ongoing project with HUTAN in Malaysia to design artificial nest boxes (see signage at the exhibit)
