Identifying Features:

Queenie is missing toenails, has cataracts, slightly smaller

History:

  • Queenie is one of two residents of the Phoenix Zoo who have been here since it opened in 1962.

  • Queenie is 2nd oldest king vulture in captivity in North America

  • Queenie & Aragorn have an offspring, Ray, currently exhibited as part of the Birds of Prey show at the AZ Renaisance Festival

  • Not breeding at this time. They are allowed to incubate a dummy egg when they lay

  • Little known about wild king vultures

  • Believed to live in emergent layer of forest

  • Poor sense of smella

  • Beak = can opener

  • Young are all black; takes 5 years to turn white
