History:

  • New: Coral arrived from the Little Rock Zoo on 11/4/24.

  • We have a breeding recommendation from the SSP for Tyson & Coral.

  • Tyson weighs in 1.1 lbs 

  • Our other Geoffroy's marmoset,  Posh has passed away in April, 2024. She was the one that had the short tail.

More Information:

  • Found in coastal Brazil; mainly in tropical and subtropical forests

  • IUCN: Least concern, but numbers are decreasing

  • Not considered endangered due to ocurrenct in protected, however their habitat is being quickly destroyed, and they are sometimes hunted for the pet trade

  • Diet: primarily insects, fruit, plant exudates and nectar; also eat small vertebrates

  • Dentition is developed to allow for gouging into tre branches and vines to get tree sap.

  • Groups of 4 to 15 individuals

  • Gestation lasts 148 days and births are typically timed with times of higher fruit availability

  • Infant rearing is cooperative with all members of troop participating

General information about Tamarins and Marmosets

  • Generally give birth to twins (triplets and singletons do occur)

  • Young carried on back of parents

  • Large social groups often with both tamarins and marmosets

  • Males and females help to raise off spring

  • Sharp claws - used to dig into tree bark

  • Diurnal
