Identifying Features:

  • Edna has brighter orange eyes, blue neck, smaller legs 

  • Sneetch is larger with brown eyes and grey neck

History:

  • Edna likes to sit down to eat and also to get his head and ears rubbed.

  • It is normal for him to sit down when a keeper is present to get a head massage. He is not sick. 

  • Edna is very comfortable hanging out with the keepers and is incredibly mellow. 

  • Edna will eat produce including corn, peas, carrots, lettuce, and grapes. 

  • Sneetch is more bold than Edna and is very particular about who she likes in the exhibit. 

  • Sneetch only likes to eat pellets. Will spit out produce or any other novel food item.

More Information:

  • Second tallest bird in the world

  • Endemic to Australia

  • Long, powerful legs

  • Can run 31 mph

  • Females court males

  • Emu egg has ripe avacado coloring

  • Male is left to incubate eggs alone, foregoing food and water for the whole incubation period

  • Male guards chicks from predators for five to seven months
