Identifying Features:

  • Stripe - smaller build, blunter crest 

  • Marimonda - narrow crest 

History:

  • Stripe and Lola (dec) are parents to 2 sets of twins: Marimonda & Tunda (10/16/17) and Walnut & Hazelnut (6/1/18).

  •  Tunda moved to Idaho Falls Zoo in 2020. 

  • Walnut & Hazelnut are deceased.

More Information:

  • The cotton-top tamarin is one of three Amazonian species of tamarin living in northwestern Columbia. 

  • Males and females are about the same size, with an average height of 9” and an average weight (in managed care) of 565g. 

  • Wild tamarins weight significantly less, averaging about 450g. 

  • Live in tropical forests, open woodlands, and secondary growth forests

  • Arboreal

  • Eat insects, sap, fruit, and nectar

  • One of most endangered primates; IUCN: Critically Endangered

  • Threatened by habitat loss, pet trade

General information about Tamarins and Marmosets

  • Generally give birth to twins (triplets and singletons do occur)

  • Young carried on back of parents

  • Large social groups often with both tamarins and marmosets

  • Males and females help to raise off spring

  • Sharp claws - used to dig into tree bark

  • Diurnal
